Palm Fiber Hand Woven Pendant
Handwoven on the Pacific Coast of Colombia by Wounaan Indian women.
Using a traditional technique, the process begins by obtaining the threads from the leaves of the Toquilla, which are then dyed and interwoven to create beautiful and intricate pieces that are the ultimate expression of the region’s culture and identity. For decades, artisan communities in the region have preserved this art of weaving Toquilla palm, and it currently constitutes their main source of income.
To make these pendants men first gather leaves from palm tree. Women then carefully pull the thin fibers from each palm leaf, wash and dry them using a variety of plants and minerals.
The fibers are then interwoven to create beautiful and intricate pieces that are the ultimate expression of the region’s culture and identity. For decades, artisan communities in the region have preserved this art of weaving palm, and it currently constitutes their main source of income.
